What is a twill ribbon ?

The term ‘twill’ has very ancient origins, deriving from the Latin ‘serica’ and the Greek ‘serikos’, both of which mean ‘made of silk’. Today, it refers to a weave in which the weft threads pass under one warp thread, then over three or four warp threads, shifting by one thread with each pass. This type of weave creates a pattern of diagonal lines.

Twill tape, is characterised by a herringbone weave, which produces an aesthetic effect and also improves strength. Twill weave looks the same on both the right side and the wrong side.

In garment design, twill tape is used for finishing, reinforcing borders, masking seams or for ornamentation. Twill is also used in leather goods, for bag handles, straps and other accessories.
